How to choose a Shopify developer for your store.

Choose a Shopify developer by comparing the work they will deliver, relevant examples, communication, testing and ownership arrangements. A useful quote explains the store pages, product count, theme work, revisions, third-party costs and handover. A low headline price alone does not describe the full project.

Start with the store you need

Write a short brief before comparing developers. Include what you sell, your initial product count, variants, intended markets, existing assets and the problem the store must solve. Add links to your current website and a few examples, explaining what you like about them.

Separate launch essentials from later ideas. A subscription feature, a large catalogue import or a new content library can change a project substantially. Clear priorities make it easier to compare a freelancer, studio or agency on the same scope.

Seven questions to ask before hiring

  1. What exactly is included?

Ask for the page list, number of products, variant work and integrations. Confirm whether copy, imagery and product-data cleanup are supplied by you or created as part of the project.

  2. How will the theme be used?

Ask which parts are theme configuration and which require additional development. Confirm the theme licence, ownership and any limitations affecting your requested layout.

  3. Which examples are relevant?

Review published work and ask which parts the developer delivered. Look at the product and mobile experience, not only a screenshot. A concept should be identified as a concept.

  4. How do feedback and changes work?

Agree review checkpoints and revision rounds. Ask how additional products, new pages or a changed direction affect the fee and delivery date.

  5. What will I pay after launch?

List the platform subscription, domain, paid theme, apps and ongoing services. Separate one-time project work from recurring charges and specify the quote currency.

  6. How will the store be tested?

Ask about mobile navigation, product variants, cart behaviour and a test order. Agree how defects are reported and which issues must be resolved before launch approval.

  7. What happens at handover?

Confirm the accounts and access you retain, the instructions you receive and the support period. Ask what happens when that period ends or another developer takes over.

Why do Shopify developer quotes vary?

Two quotes may describe different work. A configured theme with a small, prepared catalogue differs from a store needing content production, complex options or integrations. Compare deliverables, responsibilities and exclusions before comparing totals.

If a quote needs to fit a smaller budget, reduce the launch scope explicitly. Ask which items can wait, rather than assuming the same work will be delivered with less testing or an unclear handover.

Keep ownership and access clear

Do not put your main account password in an enquiry form. Arrange appropriate, limited access for the work. Shopify describes how to restrict permissions and remove collaborator access after a project in its official access guidance.

Keep a record of the owner for the store, domain, theme licences and paid apps. Access should reflect the task; a design review is not a reason to grant unrelated customer or financial access.

What should I bring to the first call?

Bring the brief, your product list, brand assets and a budget range you are comfortable discussing. You do not need a finished presentation. Ask the developer to explain the next decision, the information still needed and how the written proposal will be prepared.
